Stopping Sooners
Kansas State came close to holding Oklahoma to a season-low points total during a 80-69 victory on Saturday at Bramlage Coliseum.
The Wildcats held the Sooners to fewer than 70 points for the second time all season, falling short of only Wisconsin in terms of defensive efficiency. The Badgers held Oklahoma to 65 points in November, but lost the game 65-48. Buddy Hield scored 12 points in the win.
Okahoma coach Lon Kruger praised K-State for the effort.
“We got beat by a club that out-fought us, worker hard harder, were more energetic to loose balls and were active,” Kruger said. “All night long, they were just a little quicker to balls coming off the boards or loose balls in the paint. They played well.”
Okahoma entered the day shooting 48 percent from three, but went 6 of 24 from beyond the arc against K-State.
K-State guard Wesley Iwundu defended Hield.
“He is long and aggressive,” Hield said of Iwundu. “Guys like him, you have to attack off the dribble, and I started to do that late in the second half and feeling myself a little bit. Now I know what to do when guys play like that, to stop settling and attack.”
Dream come true
Dean Wade said beating Oklahoma was the type of moment he came to K-State for.
“You always dream about playing against the No. 1 team,” Wade said. “That’s something you think about when you’re a kid practicing in your driveway. It has been a good journey. Truly, unbelievable.”
