Hurtin’ Hawks
Kansas State won its second straight game against an opponent that played without its leading scorer.
But North Dakota was in worse shape than Colorado State was over the weekend. The Fighting Hawks were without top scorer Quinton Hooker (17.6 points) and point guard Geno Crandall (9.3 points). They struggled without the two starters, particularly on offense, but made things difficult on K-State by playing a solid zone defense.
“I thought we just competed well,” North Dakota coach Brian Jones said. “We did not give in without two points, our two play makers. I thought we just really battled.”
Low on stamina
Forwards D.J. Johnson and Dean Wade both appeared more energetic than they did over the weekend, but coach Bruce Weber said both players still battled stamina issues.
Johnson had six points and seven rebounds in 21 minutes, while Wade had nine points and six rebounds in 28 minutes. Weber described both players as “dead” energy-wise after they played for short segments. He hopes both players can gain stamina before Big 12 play begins.
