Intrust interest

Bruce Weber and Larry Eustachy both had positive things to say about the 9,367 fans that showed up for Kansas State’s 61-56 victory against Colorado State on Saturday.

The crowd wasn’t as big as K-State’s previous trips to Wichita against West Virginia and Gonzaga, which were both packed with fans, but it was likely better than what the Wildcats could have drawn at Bramlage Coliseum with students on winter break.

“It has been a while since I have been to Manhattan, but I did not see any green shirts besides my wife and some other friends,” Eustachy said. “I wasn’t suprised. I’m not sure if it was considered a success or a failure, but I thought it was very successful.”

When told it was the smallest crowd to watch K-State play at the venue, Eustachy smiled.

“Probably the opponent,” he said. “They played Gonzaga last time. That’s the truth. I know what basketball is around here, and it was really cool. I think when we go to Denver next year (for the return game in the series) we will have a really good crowd. It is a wonderful situation.”

Weber looks forward to returning in 2017.

“We appreciate our fans,” Weber said. “I thought there was good energy in here. Maybe we were a little too emotional at the beginning, trying to do too much. The two times I have been here we have had great crowds.”

Praise for Weber

Eustachy had nothing but compliments for Weber after the game.

“Certainly their strength is their coach,” he said. “I am blown away how he has gotten this team to play this way and have such a record with some of the departures and the guys he had leave the program. He’s got my vote for national coach of the year so far. He’s done terrific.”

D.J. Johnson out

Junior forward D.J. Johnson didn’t play in the second half against Colorado State. Weber said he asked out of the game after getting kicked in the foot in the first half. Weber hopes he will be able to play in K-State’s next game on Tuesday.
