Solid outing for Johnson
D.J. Johnson quietly put together his best game of the season in Saturday’s 78-68 loss to Texas A&M.
The junior forward had 14 points, six rebounds and two blocks, providing Kansas State with valuable hussle plays in a game in which it played catch up the whole way. It was a positive sign for Johnson, who missed all of last season with a broken foot and is still trying to build up his stamina.
“I told him last night, ‘I know you are frustrated with some things, but just do what you do,’” Weber said. “He made the difference in the Georgia game, playing hard. That is all he has to focus on, playing hard and watching things happen. Tonight he gets 14 points and six rebounds, he was very active and very good. There is no doubt about it.”
Johnson played with a stint on his hand, because he is dealing with an injured thumb. But that didnt’ slow him down.
“It feels good to be back,” Johnson said, “and playing a little more than I was.”
Edwards, Wade struggle
K-State senior Justin Edwards entered Saturday as the team’s all-around best player, leading the Wildcats in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals and minutes. But he was hardly a difference-maker against Texas A&M.
Edwards made 2 of 12 shots on his way to eight points. At one point he missed an open dunk, clanging the ball off the rim.
Dean Wade also struggled. The freshman made one of three shots on his way to two points. He faded into the background for the first time in a K-State uniform.
“Dean Wade just wasn’t right today,” Weber said.
