Weber unsure if he’ll redshirt Williams
Bruce Weber said Sunday he is still debating whether to play Dante Williams this season or hold him out with a redshirt.
Williams, a 7-foot freshman forward from Arlington, Texas, has dressed for K-State’s past two games after watching the first four in sweats while recovering from injury.
“One of the last things I said before today’s game was, ‘Are we going to play him tonight?’” Weber said. “He is probably not ready now, but he blocked Justin (Edwards) in practice the other day in practice and got a big roar from our other players. You are behind five months and you have practiced a couple weeks. We will have to see what happens here in the next stretch and how much progress he makes.”
Williams is a skilled shot-blocker, and Weber could use him for defense inside. But he could also save him for the next four seasons.
A decision should come soon.
“If we are going to need him for our season,” Weber said. “We will have to use him.”
Johnson sits
Junior forward D.J. Johnson missed Sunday’s game for precautionary reasons, Weber said.
Johnson missed all of last season while recovering from a broken foot, and the Wildcats have eased him back into action. After playing several games in quick order last week, they wanted to give him a rest with more important games ahead.
“It took a toll playing three games in five days,” Weber said. “We made the decision to rest him. I was hoping we wouldn’t need him.”
Weber said Johnson should be back for the Georgia game on Friday.
