Kansas State women thump Abilene Christian 76-45

The Kansas State women’s basketball team pulled away from Abilene Christian for a 76-45 victory on Monday.

K-State (2-0) trailed 18-17 after the first quarter, but dominated the rest of the way behind 20 points from Megan Deines and 19 points from Breanna Lewis.

Both K-State players were impressively efficient. Lewis made nine of 12 shots, while grabbing five rebounds and blocking five shots. Deines made seven of 10 shots, including two threes, adding three steals and two assists.

The inside-outside combination was too much for Abilene Christian (1-1) to keep up with.

"Offensively we did some good things," K-State coach Jeff Mittie said. "I liked our ball movement.

Deines may have had the most encouraging game of anyone. It was arguably her best game in a K-State uniform. Ten of her points came quickly in the second quarter, helping the Wildcats build a large lead.

"Getting it inside was key," she said. "Sometimes they came and guarded me so Lewis was wide open and I could just pass it to her."

Lewis took advantage.

"It was good to be nine for 12, but I feel like I am not satisfied with myself," Lewis said. "I want to improve in some other areas, like rebounds."

K-State locked up the victory with a strong defensive effort that limited Abilene Christian to a shooting percentage of 21.2.

Mittie said he was proud of the effort in most areas, but he wants more from K-State in its next game against South Dakota on Thursday.

"Defensively, I am still concerned with a lot of areas, but it got a little better as the night went on," Mittie said. "I wouldn’t pay much attention to their stats. They had a rough shooting night. I think it was a little more them than us. All in all, not bad. I think this was a pretty good test for us."
