K-State women win easily in coach Jeff Mittie’s debut

Jeff Mittie’s coaching debut with the Kansas State women’s basketball team was a positive one.

The Wildcats dominated Southern Illinois-Edwardsville 81-55 on Friday at Bramlage Coliseum, allowing Mittie to empty the bench and use 13 players in the season opener.

Five K-State players scored in double figures, with Breanna Lewis leading the way. She scored 13 points while Ashia Woods and Ashley Jones each scored 11 points. Bri Craig and Erica Young added 10 points apiece.

“I thought it was a decent start,” Mittie said. “Our offense really started with the defense and then as we got more comfortable, I thought our inside play was critical. If you combine our inside group, they were very, very efficient. We got lifts off of people off the bench.”

The Wildcats raced to a 39-24 halftime lead and never looked back. Tierny Austin scored 17 points for SIUE, but that wasn’t enough to keep the game close. K-State held SIUE to 30-percent shooting and forced it into 25 turnovers.

K-State is next in action Tuesday against UMKC.

“It feels good (to get the first victory),” Mittie said. “Every year with the first one there is anxiety of just getting to it. We want to show our fans that we are going to play hard and play it the right way.”
