Before he left Bramlage Coliseum on Tuesday night, Kansas State men’s basketball coach Jerome Tang took a moment to send some well wishes to a rival.
Even though the Wildcats were fresh off an 81-78 home victory against Utah with a Sunflower Showdown game with Kansas coming up on Saturday, Tang wanted to share some kind words on KU coach Bill Self.
Self was hospitalized earlier this week in Lawrence and missed the Jayhawks’ road game against Colorado on Tuesday.
“My prayers go out to Coach Self, who’s not with the team today,” Tang said. “I just pray that he is doing well and healthy and gets back on the sideline. College basketball is better with Bill Self involved.”
It goes without saying that Tang is hoping to see Self on the sideline when Kansas visits K-State at 7 p.m. Saturday in Manhattan. Jacque Vaughn served as the acting head coach for KU during its conference victory over the Buffaloes on Tuesday.
But it is too early to know when Self will be able to rejoin his team.
Self provided an update on his health on Tuesday afternoon.
“I’m feeling much better and I want to thank the well-wishers and the great team at LMH Health,” Self said in a news release. “I’ll be sitting out tonight’s game, and as I’ve said before, we have an elite coaching staff at KU, and I know our players are in good hands in Boulder.
“Jacque Vaughn will serve as the acting head coach tonight. He will rely on our great group of coaches, Jeremy Case, Kurtis Townsend, Joe Dooley and Tony Bland, throughout the game to lead the team.”
