One of the best players to ever wear a Kansas State football uniform will be coaching for a rival Big 12 team next season.
Michael Bishop, a former K-State quarterback who guided the Wildcats to their first No. 1 ranking in school history, has joined the Houston Cougars as an offensive assistant.
Willie Fritz hired Bishop on Wednesday. Bishop spent the past five seasons as head coach at Legacy School of Sport Sciences in Spring, Texas. While there, he led the Titans to an overall record of 36-21 while coaching five-star quarterback recruit Keisean Henderson.
Fritz recently signed Henderson to the Houston football roster, so it makes sense for him to reconnect with his high school coach in college.
But Bishop and Fritz have more history than that. Fritz coached Bishop when he played quarterback for two seasons at Blinn College. Together, they led Blinn to back-to-back undefeated seasons and a pair of junior college national championships.
From there, Bishop transferred to K-State and started 25 games for the Wildcats in 1997 and ‘98. He threw for over 4,400 yards and 36 touchdowns in his two seasons to go along with 1,300 yards and 23 touchdowns as a rusher.
The Wildcats won 11 games in both seasons with Bishop in command of the huddle.
Bishop went on to play in the NFL for two seasons after getting drafted 227th overall in the seventh round by the New England Patriots in 1999.
He will now try his hand as an assistant coach at the college level.
It won’t be long before he coaches against his alma mater. K-State is scheduled to host Houston at a to-be-determined date and time next season at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.
