Kansas State Wildcats baseball team makes NCAA Regional for second straight year
The Kansas State baseball team is heading back to the NCAA Tournament.
Head coach Pete Hughes and the Wildcats celebrated at a watch party on Monday in Manhattan when they learned they had been selected for the postseason.
Most expected K-State to make the field of 64 after the team won 31 games during the regular season and finished Big 12 play with an impressive record of 17-13. But there was no guarantee that an invitation was on the way.
So the Wildcats could breathe easy when they earned a No. 3 seed into the competition.
K-State was one of the last four teams selected for the tournament, along with Arizona State, Oklahoma State and USC.
After missing out on the NCAA Tournament in his first five seasons at K-State, Hughes has now led the Wildcats to a NCAA Regional in back-to-back years. They will try to build off the success they had last season, when they advanced to an NCAA Super Regional.
K-State will begin the postseason in the Austin, Texas regional along with former conference rival Texas, UTSA and Houston Christian.
Beating the Longhorns on their own turf won’t be easy. But the Wildcats played a difficult schedule this season and should not be intimidated by the environment.
Games are scheduled to begin in Austin on Friday with K-State taking on UTSA at 6 p.m. on ESPN+ and Texas playing Houston Christian at 1 p.m. on the same streaming service.
The four teams will play a double-elimination tournament. Only the winner will advance to a 2025 Super Regional.
