About Iowa State (22-8, 12-7 Big 12)
The Cyclones are coming off a double overtime loss against BYU. They have faded since a 15-1 start and now sit at 22-8. But Iowa State has still posted a strong overall season.
Keshon Gilbert leads the team in scoring, with Joshua Jefferson next in line. The Cyclones are at their best in the paint on both offense and defense. They average 54.6% on shots from within the arc, and they limit opponents to 47.4% on shots from within the arc. Iowa State is also good at creating turnovers on defense.
About Kansas State (15-15, 9-10 Big 12)
The Wildcats are coming off a 54-49 victory at Cincinnati. They have won back-to-back games heading into the season-finale against Iowa State.
Coleman Hawkins is back in the starting lineup, but he is not at 100% as he deals with a fractured tibia in his right leg. David N’Guessan has been a consistent scorer of late. He has scored 20 or more points in four of K-State’s past nine games. The Wildcats are at their best on defense, and they are particularly stingy at the 3-point line. Teams are only shooting 31.5% against them from beyond the arc this season.
K-State game prediction
The Wildcats pulled off a shocker when they went to Hilton Coliseum earlier this season and defeated the Cyclones 80-61.
K-State was a big underdog in that game, but it won easily.
Iowa State is favored to win the rematch by 7.5 points, which makes sense when you consider that the Cyclones have a healthy roster and Hawkins is playing on one good leg for the Wildcats.
The Cyclones didn’t have Milan Momcilovic in the first meeting between these teams. His return could make a big difference. Iowa State has only lost two games this season when its main contributors were all healthy. Those losses came by two against Auburn and three against BYU.
K-State has found success at home against Iowa State in recent years. The Wildcats are 2-0 against the Cyclones inside Bramlage Coliseum under Jerome Tang.
That should give him and K-State players hope that they can once again protect their home court against their Farmaggedon rivals.
But motivation might be on Iowa State’s side. This is a revenge spot for the Cyclones, and they are the healthier team.
This game may come down to turnovers. If K-State can protect the ball and play strong defense, it will have a shot. If Iowa State is able to score in transition, it could be a long day for the Wildcats.
In the end, I give Iowa State a small edge in what figures to be a close game.
