David Garrett, a three-year starter in the Kansas State secondary, was shot and killed outside a Cleveland nightclub early Saturday morning.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported that Garrett, 26, was shot at about 3:25 a.m. He was shot in the chest and taken to a hospital, where he died about 35 minutes later.

Witnesses told police there had been a fight inside the nightclub that continued outside, the Plain Dealer reported. A shot was fired into the crowd hitting Garrett. No arrest had been made as of late Saturday afternoon.

Garrett played high school football in nearby Painesville, Ohio, then joined the Fort Scott Community College team in 2007. He transferred to Kansas State after one season and became a two-year starter at cornerback. He was honorable-mention All-Big 12 after his junior and senior seasons.
