Big 12 reprimands K-State’s Bruce Weber for criticizing refs on block/charge calls

Kansas State basketball coach Bruce Weber shared some critical words about the officials that worked the Wildcats’ 69-62 loss against Texas Tech last week.

“I can’t say much about officials, but they have to figure out what a charge and a block is,” Weber said on Wednesday at United Supermarkets Arena. “It’s sad. It makes it tough. We have great officials in this league and Curtis Shaw does a great job, but they have to figure it out, because we have had a bunch that have been wrong.”

On Monday, the Big 12 publicly reprimanded Weber for those comments, as they violated the conference’s sportsmanship and ethical conduct rules.

“There are proper channels within the conference structure to handle officiating concerns,” Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby said in a statement. “Coach Weber’s public comments are contrary to the conference’s sportsmanship standards.”

Weber seemed more upset than usual with the officials throughout K-State’s loss to Texas Tech, which was worked by Terry Wymer, John Higgins and Chance Moore. The Wildcats were whistled for 21 fouls, while the Red Raiders were called for 16 fouls.

K-State forwards Makol Mawien and Montavious Murphy both finished with four fouls.

“Chris (Beard) does a great job getting them to come and take charges,” Weber continued, “but they have to be out of the circle and they have to be there and (the officials) have got to make the right call.”

There is no penalty connected to a public reprimand from the Big 12.

K-State will play its next game at No. 2 Baylor on Tuesday.
