Big 12 cancels games through academic year, suspends all practices and meetings
The Big 12 has canceled all conference and nonconference games through the end of the academic year because of concerns related to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
In addition, the league has suspended all organized team activities — including team and individual practices, such as spring football workouts, and meetings — until March 29, when the next step will be re-evaluated.
The proclamation came one day after the Big 12 basketball tournaments and all NCAA winter and spring sports championships were canceled.
K-State athletic director Gene Taylor sent out a statement afterward.
“We must continue to emphasize the safety and well-being of our student-athletes, coaches, staff and University community,” Taylor said. “I know this is a very difficult time for our teams and student-athletes, and even our fans, but we all have to do our part in helping make our community, state and nation as safe as possible. As we have stated before, this is a very serious and fluid situation with many layers and we will continue to work closely with appropriate medical professionals, the Big 12 Conference and our University administration to monitor the situation.”
Earlier Friday, an NCAA council recommended athletes in spring sports be given eligibility relief. There has been no determination whether the same exception would be made for athletes in winter sports like basketball.
