NBA rookie’s older brother scores 100 points in NAIA game without playing 40 minutes

So how exactly does a player score 100 points for his or her basketball team?

In the case of J.J. Culver, a senior at Wayland Baptist, you score your team’s first 42 points in a game. That’s what Culver did Tuesday night as the Pioneers defeated Southwestern Adventist University 124-60 in an NAIA game.

“We always script our first couple of plays, and J.J. scored on the first three or four,” Wayland coach Ty Harrelson said on the school’s website. “The guys realized he was hot and kept going to him. We figured as long as he’s taking good shots and shots out of our philosophy that he had a chance to do something special tonight.”

Culver made 34 of 62 shots, including 12 of 33 three-pointers, and 20 of 27 free throws. He also had a team-best nine rebounds and added five steals.

Oh, and Culver only played 38 minutes. Here is the box score:

Culver’s younger brother, Jarrett, is a rookie from Texas Tech who plays for the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Alas, Culver didn’t set the NAIA record for points in a game. That mark is held by Clarence “Bevo” Francis, who scored 113 points as Rio Grande College beat Hillsdale College, 134-91 on Feb. 2, 1954.
