My AP top 25: Oklahoma moves up to No. 1 as Alabama, Miami stumble

The playoff picture looks a lot different today.

Alabama lost to Auburn. Miami lost to Pittsburgh. Two teams that appeared to be locks for the top four are now on the outside looking in.

Miami can still probably make the playoff by winning the ACC championship game next week. I dropped the Hurricanes to No. 6, but a win over Clemson would likely move them back up.

The outlook appears much worse for Alabama. The Crimson Tide have been a rich man’s Wisconsin this season, piling up wins against a mostly weak schedule. With an undefeated record, that was enough to merit the No. 1 ranking. With a loss, you can’t argue for them to make the playoff. At least not today. Their best wins are against LSU and Mississippi State. They can’t win the SEC. Their resume no longer looks all that impressive. Alabama will need chaos next week to sneak back into the top four.

So who’s the new No. 1?

Oklahoma is back on top after throttling West Virginia. If the Sooners beat TCU and win the Big 12 championship game next week, they will make their second trip to the playoff. Clemson comes in at No. 2 and Wisconsin is finally in the top 4 at No. 3. I’m still not high on the Badgers, but they are the nation’s only undefeated team. They will also make the playoff if they win the Big Ten. Auburn rounds out the top four. With recent wins over Alabama and Georgia, you could argue Auburn deserves to be ranked higher, but it also has two losses.

My playoff four: Oklahoma, Clemson, Wisconsin, Auburn.

My next four: Alabama, Miami, Georgia, Ohio State.

Elsewhere, Stanford and Washington made jumps into the top 15 after beating Notre Dame and Washington State, respectively. The Irish and the Cougars fell to the edge of the top 20.

Mississippi State dropped out of the top 25. Welcome to the club Fresno State.
