My preseason ballot, as you might expect, was nothing more than guesswork. Sure, I had an idea on where teams would finish this season. But until you actually sit down and watch the teams play, you don’t really know how good they are going to be.

We still don’t truly know, with many teams facing inferior competition in Week 1, but we have a better idea now.

This week, I rewarded teams that won challenging games and played away from home. The only team remaining in my top 25 with a loss is Wisconsin, which lost a close game to LSU in Houston.

A few quick hits:

On top: Florida State. Most expected the Seminoles to beat Oklahoma State more comfortably than they did, but the Cowboys should finish in the top half of the Big 12 this season. Defeating a power-conference team on a neutral field keeps Florida State at the No. 1 spot.

Biggest jump: Texas A&M. The Aggies rocketed up my rankings from No. 19 to No. 8 after blowing out South Carolina on the road. New quarterback Kenny Hill looked like a Heisman contender, throwing for 511 yards and three touchdowns. Winning 52-28 in a difficult road environment was the most impressive victory of college football’s opening week. I put some thought into moving the Aggies all the way up to No. 1.

Biggest drop: South Carolina. The Gamecocks were obviously overrated. I voted them 12th in the preseason, but dropped them all the way out of the top 25 after failing to stay within three touchdowns of Texas A&M at home.

New arrivals: Penn State checks in at No. 20 after a gutty win over Central Florida in Ireland. I was also impressed by the way BYU handled Connecticut on the road. Taysom Hill shined at quarterback, and it will be interesting to see what he can do at Texas this weekend.
