Four-run fifth inning helps Wingnuts put away AirHogs
Martin Medina’s two-run single and a key Texas error helped the Wingnuts score four fifth-inning runs, leading Wichita to a 5-4 victory over the AirHogs on Monday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
Brian Bistagne’s error at second base prevented a second out in the fifth inning. With the out, Wichita would’ve been held to one run in the inning. But the error led to Brent Clevlen’s run-scoring single and Medina’s single that scored Clevlen and T.J. Mittelstaedt.
Ryan Kussmaul gave up three runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings, coming up one out short of getting the Wingnuts victory. Chase Johnson got the final out of the fifth and gave up a sixth-inning run, but still got the victory. Frankie Reed pitched a scoreless ninth for his eighth save.
The Wingnuts (21-15) retained a 1 1/2-game lead in the American Association South over Laredo. Wichita plays host to Texas at 7:05 p.m. the next three nights.
