Kansas City Royals pitcher Kris Bubic didn’t respond well following his most recent rehab start this week.

The left-handed starter allowed six runs (five earned), eight hits and one walk in 1 1/3 innings with Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday. The 28-year-old veteran threw 29 of 49 pitches for strikes against the Las Vegas Aviators (the Athletics’ affiliate).

Bubic was scheduled to make another rehab start this weekend. He will now get another medical evaluation instead.

“He will not make his start on Sunday,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “His forearm feels good (but) his shoulder didn’t respond as well to the previous start. So he is going to see a doctor sometime this weekend, and we’ll know more at that point.”

The Royals are currently without three of their starters. Bubic is joined by Cole Ragans (elbow) and Seth Lugo (concussion) as rotation pitchers on the injured list.

Bubic was placed on the 15-day injured list on May 18 (retroactive to May 15) with left-elbow soreness. He has a 4.11 ERA in nine starts.

The Royals have filled the void with young starters Luinder Avila and Stephen Kolek, who were lined up to start during this weekend’s series against the Houston Astros.

Avila started Friday’s opener against the Astros at Kauffman Stadium. Kolek is scheduled to pitch Sunday’s series finale.
