More good news for KU baseball: Jayhawks to host NCAA Super Regional after upset

Kansas baseball’s path to the College World Series will run through Lawrence in the coming days.

KU (45-16), which went 3-0 to win the NCAA Tournament’s Lawrence Regional Friday through Sunday at Hoglund Ballpark, on Monday was awarded host site for Super Regionals when Oklahoma (36-22) defeated Georgia Tech for a second-consecutive day to claim the regional title in Atlanta.

As the higher seed, KU will have homefield advantage in a best-of-three series versus the Sooners, KU’s former Big 12 opponent now in the SEC. The Sooners also rallied from six runs down to defeat Georgia Tech 15-8 on Sunday, forcing Monday’s elimination game.

No. 2 Georgia Tech finished the year 50-10.

The NCAA bracket has the Super Regional round of games running Friday through Monday. The best-of-three series feature the final 16 teams vying for a spot in the CWS, June 12 to 22 in Omaha.

The schedule was released for KU’s Super Regional clash vs. Oklahoma on Tuesday morning:

  • Game 1: Saturday, June 6 | 5 p.m. Central | ESPN2
  • Game 2: Sunday, June 7 | 5 p.m. Central | TBD
  • Game 3: Monday, June 8 | TBD | TBD

Bracket play for the College World Series is June 12-18, and the best-of-three championship series will be June 20-22.

Oklahoma, which was the home team despite playing in Georgia, trailed overall No. 2 seed Tech 7-3 after six innings in Monday’s 8-7 10-inning victory.

OU scored five unanswered runs. Dayton Tockey had the big hit, a walk-off home run in the 10th inning. This marks OU’s first trip to Super Regionals since 2022. KU has never been to a Super Regional.

The Sooners, who finished 11th in the SEC standings, led Georgia Tech 3-0 after one inning, but the Yellow Jackets scored two in the third and fifth and three in the sixth to grab the four-run lead.

The Jayhawks, the No. 15 overall seed in the 64-team field, advanced to the Super Regional by sweeping their way through the first-ever regional hosted at Hoglund Ballpark. KU beat Arkansas 5-3 on Saturday night to advance to the regional final, where they beat Arkansas again Sunday night 13-10. KU beat Northeastern 6-3 in Friday’s regional opener.

The Jayhawks season thus far includes winning the Big 12 regular-season and postseason tourney title to go with the regional crown. Shortstop Tyson LeBlanc was named most outstanding player of the Lawrence regional. He hit a home run in all three games.
