Kansas City Royals outfielder Isaac Collins is considered day-to-day after exiting Tuesday’s game against the Detroit Tigers with a right knee contusion.
Collins, 28, banged his knee on the left-field wall at Comerica Park. He tumbled into the front row as he attempted to catch a foul ball off the bat of Tigers rookie Kevin McGonigle.
The injury occurred in the first inning.
“I remember it being in the air for a while, initially, right off the bat,” Collins said. “I didn’t even think about the wall at all. And then, yeah, it just kept drifting on me. Obviously, in hindsight, I wish I would’ve checked the wall. But the fact it was 3 feet tall, I don’t know if that even would’ve affected anything.”
Royals manager Matt Quatraro and head trainer Kyle Turner raced out to check on Collins. After a few minutes, Collins walked off the field under his own power.
“Right when it happened, I know I’d be a liability out there,” Collins said. “That’s kind of why we decided I probably shouldn’t play or finish the inning, because I don’t want another line drive hit at me and I hobble over to the ball.”
The Royals replaced Collins with Tyler Tolbert in left field. On Wednesday, Collins was not in the starting lineup.
“I feel good,” Collins said. “I’m just grateful I didn’t hit my head or anything on the seats in the stands. It could’ve been a lot worse. I saw the video. But I feel pretty good today. Just moving around and trying to get the swelling out as quick as possible.”
Collins was able to get treatment after Tuesday’s game.
“He’s not ready to play,” Quatraro said Wednesday. “You know, extreme emergency, maybe come off the bench. But, you know, it’s something that’s going to take a couple of days.”
Collins has appeared in 16 games this season. He is hitting .214 (9-for-42) with a home run and four RBIs.
The Royals started Lane Thomas in left field Wednesday. He has posted strong career numbers against Tigers starter Jack Flaherty.
Collins will try to find his way back into the lineup soon.
“It’s obviously good news,” Collins said. “And now, it’s get as much swelling out and try to get that range of motion back. Just try to get back to normal as quick as possible.”
