See Darryn Peterson’s highlight dunk vs. Utah — and one KU teammate’s reaction
In a game that didn’t have many highlights, KU freshman sensation Darryn Peterson had the play of the night.
Peterson slammed a ferocious dunk while being fouled late in the second half against Utah. The dunk led to the loudest roar by the crowd inside Allen Fieldhouse all game.
“I was shocked,” said KU guard Tre White. “But I wasn’t shocked to see it.”
The Jayhawks won 71-59 in a game that was largely a slog despite a near 20-point betting line in favor of the home team.
Peterson’s teammates on the bench were stunned by the dunk. Forward Justin Cross tapped his head, gesturing that the dunk was on the defender’s head. On the court, White jumped in anticipation as Peterson slammed the ball into the hoop.
Afterward, Peterson would hit the foul shot to complete the and-one. The Jayhawks won despite a quiet game from their young star. He scored 14 points on 5-for-12 shooting with three rebounds.
“He’s so athletic,” White said. “He can turn it on anytime. I don’t know why he (the defender) jumped at the end.”
As for what Kansas coach Bill Self thought of the dunk?
“I thought it was nice,” he said.
