Bryanna Caldwell tops Wichita Open qualifying

Bryanna Caldwell topped qualifying Friday at the Wichita Open at Northrock Lanes, the third event for the Professional Women’s Bowling Association in its return after a 12-year hiatus.

Caldwell, of Red Rock, Ariz., averaged 224.08 through 12 games. He 2,689 total was four pins better than Diana Zavjalova of Latvia. Caldwell finished 289 above the cut line, a score Caldwell said she didn’t expect.

“I’m happy with the outcome today. There were a lot of talented competitors,” Caldwell said. “One of my goals was to stay clean through my games. I had a run of five clean games in a row and that set me up well. It helped build my confidence. “

Caldwell said the game plan was to use her speed and aggression to her advantage.

“Bryanna put up a fantastic score under these conditions,” PWBA Director of Operations Jason Thomas said. “In professional bowling conditions are similar that of a golf tournament; meaning there are certain handicaps. In bowling we use oil patterns to distinguish professional from amateurs.”

Professional bowlers use a significantly flatter oil patter which requires bowlers to be precise with their trajectories.

Former Wichita State bowler Jazreel Tan, who won the Lubbock Sports Open last week, finished sixth in qualifying. Current Shocker Daria Kovalova was 13th. The will be among the 16 women who advance to round robin match play beginning Saturday at 8:30 a.m.; the stepladder finals are scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Chelsea Gilliam finished 57th of the 106 competitors in qualifying in her first major competition since undergoing surgery for breast cancer last November. Gilliam finished with a 196 average. She was diagnosed in October of 2013 and though losing much of her strength, her determination never wavered.

“After my surgery immediately I decided I was going to train and get back to my passion,” Gilliam said. “Overall I’m pleased with my performance but there is an obvious difference in strength between myself and the other competitors.”

Gilliam said her rehabbing process has come along nicely and she can now use 15-pound balls in games without discomfort.
