A segment of youth sports has evolved into a rabid focus on college scholarships and getting exposure for athletes of all ages. As a result, many families are spending an ever-increasing amount of money to attain both.

According to Florida-based Sports Facilities Advisory, there are 53 million kids traveling to youth sporting events — with an economic impact of $7 billion in 2014.

Navigating this world can be disconcerting and stressful for parents and athletes. Where should parents start? Should the focus be on fun or winning or Division I scholarships?

Should a child play multiple sports or stick with one? Are personal trainers worth the expense? What league is right for my child?
