Right now: Chiefs’ Mathieu, KU’s Self, Mizzou’s Martin, more talk race & sports in KC
Today, some of the region’s biggest sports personalities and The Kansas City Star are going beyond the soundbites for a real conversation about the intersection of race and sports.
And you’re invited.
Click here to go to the KC Star Forum on Race and Sports, live.
Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu, Negro Leagues Baseball Museum president Bob Kendrick, Royals general manager Dayton Moore, Missouri men’s basketball coach Cuonzo Martin, KU men’s basketball coach Bill Self and K-State women’s basketball player Christianna Carr are taking part in the discussion right now on The Star’s Facebook page.
Each of the panelists brings unique experiences and insight to the conversation, which is being moderated by The Star’s Blair Kerkhoff.
Mathieu, who helped lead the Chiefs to a Super Bowl championship in his first year in KC, and Chiefs quarterback Patick Mahomes were among a handful of NFL stars who recently produced a video urging recognition of issues raised by the Black Lives Matter movement. The piece prompted an NFL response the following day in which commissioner Roger Goodell pledged the league’s support.
Kendrick oversees the country’s preeminent organization for keeping alive the stories of America’s Negro Leagues past. Moore leads the front office of the 2015 World Series-champion Royals and Martin and Self coach the NCAA hoops teams in Columbia and Lawrence, respectively.
Carr, meanwhile, several weeks ago took part in a peaceful march in Topeka amid the global outcry following the killing of unarmed Black man George Floyd under the knee of a since-fired and criminally charged Minneapolis police officer.
Today’s forum is being broadcast live, and all viewers are welcome. The video will remain available on The Star’s Facebook page after the broadcast and will also be added to YouTube and turned into an upcoming podcast on our daily show, SportsBeat KC.
