Wichita Wings win bid to host MASL 2 indoor soccer playoffs

For the first time in Wichita Wings history, the MASL 2 playoffs are coming to town.

The team has won a bid to play host to the Major Arena Soccer League 2 semifinals and championship game on April 5 and 6 at Hartman Arena. Tickets go on sale next week.

The Wings beat out cities like Los Angeles, Denver, Las Vegas and Albuquerque to host the playoffs, team owner Blake Shumaker said. Last season, the MASL 2 playoffs were held at the Upland Sports Arena just outside of Los Angeles, and the San Diego Sockers 2 won the championship.

The two-day event here in April will consist of four games, with the two semifinal matches set for April 5 and consolation and championship games being played April 6. The Wings (6-2) are currently in second place, on track to earn a spot in the playoffs.

“We are very excited to have been selected to host the championship rounds,” Shumaker said in a statement. “There are a lot of big expansion markets such as Las Vegas and Phoenix that were an attractive option for the league.”

The Wings beat the Kansas City Comets 8-6 in an exhibition match at Hartman Arena Sunday.

“I believe what made us stand out from the larger cities was the behind-the-scenes care we give to each visiting opponent, and of course it is an opportunity to have a packed house for those games,” Shumaker said. “It’s no secret that Wichita has some of the best fans in all of indoor soccer and everyone expects them to show up and support our bid.”
