Highlights of the WSU-Tulsa rivalry

Wichita State plays Tulsa in a men's basketball game tonight at Intrust Bank Arena. If you're wondering why veteran Shocker fans are excited about the renewal of this rivalry, here's a refresher course from archives of The Wichita Eagle.

The schools battled in all sports as Missouri Valley Conference members from 1945-1996. The rivalry peaked in basketball in the 1980s. Both teams grew into national prominence and stars such as Antoine Carr, Xavier McDaniel, Paul Pressey and Steve Harris created must-see action. Tulsa left the MVC in 1996 and the teams met seven times as non-conference rivals since.

WSU won the last meeting during the 2004-05 season. Tonight's game is the first in a four-game series.
