Observatory coming back to life

Good for the Kansas Astronomical Observers for stepping up and reopening the Lake Afton Observatory. The astronomy club recently leased the observatory from Sedgwick County after Wichita State University decided last year it could no longer afford to operate the facility. The observatory will be open to the public on Friday and Saturday evenings. Visitors can look through the 16-inch telescope, study exhibits and use smaller telescopes outside owned by club members and other volunteers. When the observatory was about to close a year ago, there was a huge increase in visitors. Now that it is opening again, the public should show similar support for this community gem and for the club that helped rescue it. – Phillip Brownlee
