It had been since 1984 that a Wichitan won an Olympic medal – Lynette Woodard in women’s basketball and Marc Waldie in men’s volleyball. And it had been since 1968 that a Wichitan won an individual medal – Jim Ryun in the 1500-meter run. So it is more than deserving that Wichita celebrate its latest champion – bronze medal boxer Nico Hernandez. The city is hosting a welcome event when Hernandez arrives at Eisenhower National Airport on Tuesday at 10:35 a.m. A parade for the North High graduate will be held Saturday at 10 a.m., starting at the Nomar International Market at 21st and Broadway. While he was at the Olympics, Hernandez said he wanted to thank everyone back home for their support. The welcome event and parade are ways to thank Hernandez for making Wichita proud. – Phillip Brownlee
