Legislature wants to censor professors, edit commentaries

The Wichita Eagle

The list of unneeded bills filed at the Legislature lengthens by the day. One of the dumbest and most offensive yet would tell newspaper editors across the state how to do their jobs: House Bill 2234 aims to forbid employees at state universities, technical schools and community colleges from using their “official title when authoring or contributing to a newspaper opinion column” when the opinion expressed concerns an elected official, a candidate or any matter pending before a government body in the state – so pretty much any topic a higher educator might want to weigh in on. The bill was referred Wednesday to the Education Committee, where it deserves to die. – Rhonda Holman
