Brownback stands up for Gold Star parents against Trump

Though he didn’t mention Donald Trump by name, at least Gov. Sam Brownback defended the Gold Star parents of Capt. Humayun Khan, who was killed while serving in Iraq. That’s more than many other GOP leaders have done. Trump went on the attack after the father, Khizr Khan, sharply criticized him during last week’s Democratic National Convention. Trump even disparaged Ghazala Khan, the soldier’s mother. Brownback responded in a statement Monday: “The courage and pain of Khizr and Ghazala Khan should be honored by all Americans.” When contacted Monday by the Kansas City Star, Sen. Pat Roberts’ spokeswoman said that Roberts “fully supports Gold Star families” and “does not agree with Donald Trump’s comments.” – Phillip Brownlee
