Opinion Line Extra (Feb. 3)

I, for one, am extremely fond of our sun. Earthlings should do everything we can to protect it. I don’t know what we would do without it.

Gov. Sam Brownback claims to be pro-life. That is hard to believe with the political “aborting” he is doing to the poor, disabled, middle class, state employees, teachers, KPERS, transportation and the judiciary.

Ideas to balance the budget? First, you raise my welfare payments. Then I promise to smoke more, drink more and go to the casino every day. Together with your sin-tax increases and my addictions, we can balance that budget. It’s about new math.

I’d like to know what percentage of the population doesn’t know that the GOP and Republican Party are one and the same.

Many preach “fair share” taxation. I think what they mean is “all they can get from me without affecting their own taxes.” When pressed, some admit to 70 percent total tax rates. Sounds like a reason for business and wealth to relocate to me.

The “Fair Fares” program doesn’t seem to be working for Wichitans any longer. Southwest Airlines is the recipient of this largesse and whenever I check its fares, they are higher than the competition’s.

Media seem quick to rally around Charlie Hebdo, but disregard protests and headlines in Europe and the U.S. for tens of thousands of Christians brutally slaughtered, tortured or forced to flee for their faith. Freedom of religion is the one from which all other freedoms spring.

I guess I thought equal meant, well, equal. Our president speaks of equality and then supports affirmative action, which by definition favors inequality, as selections and appointments are made on a basis of race and gender rather than quality and achievement.

Our forefathers didn’t believe in political parties so they didn’t pass rules to regulate same. Both political parties have now passed enough rules and regulations to assure themselves their party can pretty much do what it wants, and it will be legal.

Rachel from Card Services is performing magic these days. She called me, and caller ID said it was from my phone.
