Gratitude and support are due the Kansas Astronomical Observers, the enthusiasts group that has stepped in to lease and reopen the Lake Afton Public Observatory. After 35 years of allowing area families to explore the skies, the facility was closed by Wichita State University last year for lack of attendance and funding. The Sedgwick County Commission agreed to a lease last week, and observatory director Harold Henderson hopes for a reopening around Labor Day. The operation will need corporate and individual donations to be sustainable. A tech upgrade is planned as well. Those who enjoyed the observatory during its long run and were sad to see it close should be part of its second life. – Rhonda Holman
