Opinion Line Extra (June 26)

The electoral system has developed a number of safeguards over the past few decades to prevent someone with independence, integrity, empathy and backbone from occupying the presidency. Bernie Sanders didn’t stand a chance.

When I was growing up I read about William the Conqueror. Too bad my grandchildren will grow up reading about Donald the Divider.

It doesn’t matter that Trump’s attack on the American judge of Mexican heritage isn’t technically racism. It’s still hate speech and despicable behavior.

I can understand how somebody might vote against Hillary Clinton, but not how somebody could vote for Donald Trump.

If you want to “transform” the Democratic Party, then do so my making it more Republican. Without that, all you will achieve is making the party of wackos more reprehensible.

Terrorism is a political issue for Democrats; keeping America safe is secondary. The number of deadly terrorist attacks under Obama’s reign is higher than during Bush’s presidency. Democrats have proved to be soft on terrorism.

People who want to allow Middle East refugees into our country carte blanche are eliminating our citizens’ basic right of security.

The ultimate insult to retirees, who have funded Social Security, is the notion of giving Syrian refugees supplemental income from this fund, and then warning that Social Security is facing a shortfall and retirees can expect reduced benefits in the near future.

The definition of insanity is to repeat something and expect a different result. So the conservatives who block meaningful ways to stop criminals and unstable people from getting guns must bear all the blame for shootings like Orlando. These shootings won’t stop as long as conservatives get their way.

How do gun store owners sleep at night? It must be like the bartender who serves one too many to a driver who then causes a fatal crash. At least make the killer work for a gun by purchase through the black market, instead of legally.

When the Orlando shooter texted his wife several times and made other calls while shooting more than 100 people, this shows liberals how much freedom people will have if only outlaws have guns and AK-47s. Tell your congressmen.

These Wal-Mart employees who want a $15-an-hour wage – where is it going to stop? Pretty soon it will be $20, and on and on. You don’t support a family on a part-time job. That is extra money. Go someplace else if you aren’t happy.
