Sen. Ty Masterson, R-Andover, said social-media lies and the liberal press are why he is being challenged in his re-election. Speaking at a recent GOP candidate event in Augusta, he also blamed state government’s structural problems on “revenue estimates that are faulty, accounting issues, things that make the books look unbalanced” – not on the state’s tax policies. “The problem is not that we don’t tax our people enough, it’s that we need to be much more careful how we spend,” said Masterson (who chairs the Senate committee in charge of spending and voted Wednesday to authorize $900 million in internal borrowing). – Phillip Brownlee
