Osawatomie State Hospital plans to seek federal recertification “shortly,” the Topeka Capital-Journal reported. The psychiatric hospital was decertified last fall because of safety and staffing concerns, resulting in a loss of about $1 million a month in federal funding. Though the state and Legislature haven’t always shown enough urgency in fixing the problems, the hospital now appears to be on the right path, increasing pay and support for staff and completing renovation projects. – Phillip Brownlee
