Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Pat Roberts, R-Kan., told Roll Call that lawmakers are keeping close watch on the farm price decline, the availability of credit and some decreased land values. “I hope we’re not getting into a much deeper situation, but I think we have to monitor that very carefully,” he said. He noted that if you sit down with members of Congress and say, “I’d like to talk to you about agriculture program policy,” you’ve got about 17 seconds before their eyes glaze over. It’s more effective, he said, “if you actually talk to them about the plight of their farmers and their ranchers ... and the fact that we feed this country in a troubled world and it’s the best, safest food in the history of the world at the lowest cost. So if they are consumer-oriented, and everybody is, they just can’t take us for granted.” – Rhonda Holman
