Getting closer to resuming gas-storage inspections

Sens. Pat Roberts and Jerry Moran, R-Kan., are about to win their five-year fight to see that safety inspections of underground gas-storage facilities resume in Kansas and to protect against the kind of explosions and deaths that Hutchinson endured in 2001. The U.S. House passed legislation Wednesday containing a provision to authorize state inspection of such facilities. After a second and final approval by the Senate, it should go to the president’s desk. Credit the senators for their tenacity but also Eagle reporter Dion Lefler, who first brought the lapsed oversight of Kansas’ 11 underground gas-storage facilities to public attention in 2010. But one question: Once states are allowed to assume the responsibility for inspections, will the Brownback administration have the money to do so? – Rhonda Holman
