What about privacy, safety of transgender kids?

The Kansas Senate’s Wednesday debate about transgender students and restrooms included some insensitive, ignorant fearmongering, showing again how ill-suited lawmakers are to weigh in on human sexuality, psychiatry and most other matters of science. Senators’ intent was to decry the Obama administration’s overreaching directive, and its accompanying threat to withdraw federal funding, with a resolution they approved on a 30-8 vote. But senators variously spoke as if transgender individuals are insane and playing make-believe and transgender rights are a leftist plot – and as if allowing people to use the restroom corresponding to their gender identity is a free pass for sexual predators to attack wives and daughters and for boys who want to see girls naked. And for all the stated concern over “student privacy and safety,” there was too little for the privacy and safety of transgender kids. – Rhonda Holman
