Opinion Line (Jan. 26)

We don’t pay state troopers, teachers or police and firefighters enough. But we do pay Congress, athletes and CEOs way too much. I think that explains some of our problems.

After all the teachers in Kansas worked day and night to try to keep Gov. Sam Brownback from being re-elected, did they really think he was going to do them any favors?

Private schools in Kansas educate their students for 50 to 65 percent of what public schools spend per student, with comparable academic results. It’s high time we make public schools more efficient and less costly.

People need a permit to operate a potentially dangerous object like a car, needed for transportation, but our state Senate doesn’t think it’s necessary to require a permit to own a weapon whose only purpose is to maim and kill? The NRA and insane are truly running the asylum.

I already conceal carry without “permit.” The Second Amendment is my permit.

The new majority on the Sedgwick County Commission voted to sell worms at Lake Afton, then changed the county’s official positions on various issues. Talk about bait and switch.

The Sedgwick County Commission needs to learn how to run a proper meeting: Read your agenda packet; come prepared to take action and conduct county business. Save the nutty federal government tangents for coffee at McDonald’s.

It’s wonderful to see the County Commission beginning to move in the right direction after the former majority was socialist in nature for a number of years.

Right on, Commission Chairman Richard Ranzau. Thank you for voting “no” on a $580,000 grant to fight obesity. That money can be used more effectively where it would actually make a difference. What happened to personal responsibility in pushing away from the table?

People are mad because President Obama wants women to have pay equality and legal protection from violence, to keep the planet healthy, to have international allies instead of enemies, to halt a leaking oil pipeline built through the heartland? These are bad things?

If MSNBC wants some Fox News-type ratings, maybe it should try telling both sides of every story, as Fox does.

Why have the local television news announcers been forced to stand during parts of their broadcasts? Now I have to see if their total outfit matches, is ironed and zipped up. Please tuck them back behind the desks so I don’t feel shallow and judgmental.
