Transgender debate got personal at City Hall

The Obama administration warned schools of the potential loss of federal funds if transgender students aren’t allowed to use the restrooms and locker rooms corresponding to their gender identity. Gov. Sam Brownback denounced the directive as “unprecedented” executive overreach that “rejects both logic and prudence.” Such back-and-forth might seem like trendy politics if not for the real and increasing personal risks faced by transgender students such as Thomas Vitkus. The Friends University student’s Tuesday plea to the Wichita City Council – to change a municipal ordinance about public restrooms – and video interview with The Eagle were eye-opening.
