Any Kansas voters thinking of changing party affiliation in advance of the Aug. 2 primary need to move fast, and forget about waiting to see the field of candidates or fully grasp the issues. The 2014 Legislature moved up the party-switching deadline to noon June 1, when candidates also must file. Registered independents can wait until they vote to affiliate with a party, and those newly registering to vote in Kansas have until July 12 to enable primary participation. In all cases, contact the county election office or the Secretary of State’s Office. Proponents of the June 1 party-switching deadline, moved up from what used to be 14 days before the election, said it would protect the integrity of the process, disregarding concerns about limiting voters’ options. – Rhonda Holman
