The “Big First” congressional race got a lot more interesting last week, as Alan LaPolice decided to drop out of the GOP primary and run in November as an independent. LaPolice lost to Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Fowler/Hutchinson, by fewer than 8,000 votes in the GOP primary two years ago. But this year the race has a third Republican, Roger Marshall. LaPolice’s decision to drop out of the primary gives Marshall a more favorable one-on-one matchup against Huelskamp. Marshall, a Great Bend physician, has been endorsed by the Kansas Livestock Association and is emphasizing how Kansas has lacked a representative on the House Agriculture Committee since Huelskamp was kicked off in 2012. – Phillip Brownlee
