The Kansas House spent more than three hours last month debating and then voting on a proposal to block Common Core education standards in Kansas. A main supporter of the proposal, which was overwhelmingly defeated, said that the Legislature “needed to have this discussion” because there is a lot of public interest in the issue. So why won’t GOP leaders also allow a debate and vote on Medicaid expansion? A Medicaid expansion proposal is backed by hospitals and health and social service agencies. The public overwhelmingly supports it – 76 percent favor a budget-neutral plan according to a recent survey. It also is supported by the Wichita Metro Chamber of Commerce and other business groups. Allow a debate and a vote. – Phillip Brownlee
