State should follow Wichita on massage therapy rules

The Wichita City Council’s 6-0 vote Tuesday to regulate massage therapy was overdue, as the absence of standards has made the city as well as Kansas a mecca for sex businesses masquerading as massage parlors. The ordinance gives law enforcement more tools to fight the human trafficking and prostitution associated with these shadowy storefronts, which have proliferated in Wichita in recent years. The new licensing and training requirements also will serve the professionalism of legitimate massage therapists and businesses, which had input into the city’s rules and regulations. The state should follow Wichita’s leadership. As it is, any of the massage businesses that suddenly view Wichita as unwelcoming may just pick another target in our unregulated state. – Rhonda Holman
