Rep. Mike Pompeo, R-Wichita, said as recently as a telephone conference Monday night that he is still evaluating whether to challenge Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan. The exploratory move toward a 4th District run Monday by state Treasurer Ron Estes signaled that Pompeo’s interest in the U.S. Senate is being taken seriously in conservative circles. But could Pompeo win? The Topeka Capital-Journal highlighted an analysis by University of Minnesota political scientist Eric Ostermeier showing that no Kansas senator who was popularly elected (rather than appointed) has ever lost a bid for the party’s nomination. And as of March, Pompeo’s campaign funds amounted to less than half of the $3.1 million Moran had at the end of 2015. – Rhonda Holman
