The time seems right for the Wichita City Council to put out a request for proposals to gauge the interest in a buyer for the Hyatt Regency Wichita, which has been city-owned since 2001. Selling the Hyatt is a stated goal of Mayor Jeff Longwell, assuming it’s a win for taxpayers. Authorization of an RFP, which is on the council’s Tuesday agenda, would not obligate the city to accept an offer. But it would generate the information needed to move toward getting the city out of the hotel business. It’s added comfort that the current management deal with Hyatt Hotels Corp. lasts through 2026, and that, according to city documents, bidders would “be required to assume and maintain the Hyatt Regency flag designation and assume the requirements of the existing hotel management agreement.” – Rhonda Holman
