The Iowa caucuses won’t be back until 2020, thank goodness. But the Des Moines Register noted in an article headlined “Who has White House ambitions? Iowa visits offer hints” that Rep. Mike Pompeo, R-Wichita, was among the many Washington insiders who visited the state during the 2016 presidential election cycle – in his case on behalf of Marco Rubio’s doomed bid. The Weekly Standard’s Bill Kristol also imagined much more for the congressman while tweeting last month about how to stop Donald Trump: “Who might the Independent Republican ticket be? Mitt Romney-Gen. John Kelly? Ben Sasse-Nikki Haley? Clarence Thomas-Mike Pompeo?” Pompeo expressed some interest in the House speakership last fall, and recent statements have fueled speculation that he might challenge Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., in the GOP primary in August. – Rhonda Holman
