Use ‘cooked-up budget crisis’ as an excuse?

University of Kansas political science professor Burdett Loomis recently warned that GOP state lawmakers might use the state budget crisis that they caused as an excuse to reintroduce pet conservative policies. That’s exactly what Allysia Finley, an assistant editor of the Wall Street Journal’s OpinionJournal.com, advised, but with a twist: She blamed liberals. Finley waved off state budget concerns as liberal exaggerations (who knew Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s were liberals?), but she urged Gov. Sam Brownback and the Legislature to take advantage of the flash point to push through pension, collective-bargaining and school reforms. “It would be a mistake to let a cooked-up budget crisis go to waste,” she wrote. – Phillip Brownlee
