Credit Kansas Sens. Pat Roberts and Jerry Moran for tenacity in winning Senate approval of legislation that would restore inspection of the 11 underground gas storage facilities in Kansas, by attaching the provision to a pipeline safety bill. Now the House needs to act, as advocated by Rep. Mike Pompeo, R-Wichita. Unbelievably, it’s been seven years since a court ruling about regulatory authority halted inspection of the natural gas storage facilities in Kansas, including those near Hutchinson that led to explosions and two deaths in 2001. But as Roberts said in a statement: “We are one step closer to ensuring these facilities are inspected and safe.” – Rhonda Holman
